ABSTRACT
Soymida febrifuga (Roxb.) A.Juss. is a well known medicinal plant belonging to family Meliaceae. It is used extensively in folk medicine both for human and cattle ailments. In ayurveda it has been known to enhance strength, cure fever, tridosha, diarrhea. Hence a detailed pharmacological study on S. febrifuga has been undertaken. Pharmacological activities like analgesic, anti-inflammatory, cardiotonic, antimicrobial and hypoglycemic activity were included in the study. The plant showed cardiotonic activity as observed in normal and hypo-dynamic heart of frog. Significant inhibition of both bacteria
and fungus were exhibited inferring substantial anti-microbial activity. Further, positive correlation was seen for anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic and analgesic activity. The diverse secondary metabolites identified in S. febrifuga are thought to be responsible for the wide spectrum pharmacological action. These results authenticate the folk claims. Therefore the documentation of such uses and evaluating scientifically would be more beneficial.
