ABSTRACT

The anti-diabetic activity of ethanolic extract of Pterocarpus marsupium root was evaluated against Alloxan and Streptozotocin induced diabetes in rats. The acute toxicity studies conducted on ethanolic extract of Pterocarpus marsupium (PMEE) were found to be nontoxic at a dose of 2000mg/kg. Diabetes was induced in rats by administering alloxan monohydrate (100mg/ kg) and Streptozotocin (50mg/kg) intraperitoneally (i.p.). The two doses of ethanolic extract of Pterocarpus marsupium 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg per body weight orally and the standard group of animals showed beneficial effects against the diabetic activity. Both doses of Pterocarpus marsupium extract showed dose-dependent significant decrease in blood glucose levels, biochemical parameters such as SGPT and SGOT levels were decreased when compared with diabetic control. Histopathology of the pancreas showed regeneration of β-cells in extract treated diabetic rats. The result obtained was compared with that of the standard drug Glibenclamide. The present study provides evidence that ethanolic extract of Pterocarpus marsupium is beneficial against Alloxan and Streptozotocin induced diabetes mellitus.
