ABSTRACT
Excipients play an important role in formulating a dosage form. These are the ingredients which along with Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients make up the dosage forms. Aerosol formulation can be prepared by different methods. Area of application varies as per the need. Aerosol formulations are used for dispensing the active drug in the systemic circulation as well as it provides good local action. Aerosol does not show any side effects in any organ of the body, neither it shows any hypersensitivity to any locally applied area. No such serious adverse effects have been reported till date on application of aerosol dosage form. Bioavailability is achieved to a good extent. Earlier few toxicities of preservatives came into highlight but then same preservatives were replaced with better options. In recent time, new excipients are used to get the better efficacy of the formulation and for improving patient compliance. Active pharmaceutical ingredients, Excipients are added with propellants as per given in pharmacopoeia. Various excipients like humectants, surfactants, wetting agent, anti-foaming agent, anti-oxidants, preservatives, sorbents and vehicles are added. Various dosage forms were formulated as per target and bioavailability. This review is based on the excipients used in pharmaceutical aerosols and its variations.
