ABSTRACT
This review article collects studies on drug delivery systems, namely the transdermal route, from old techniques to advanced and impending innovative technologies. As is well known, the goal of any drug delivery system is to deliver a proper percentage of medication to the intended site of action in the body surface in order to achieve the desired effect. New approaches to improve skin permeability to hydrophilic medicines and macromolecules are being developed to broaden the field of medications for transdermal administration. Thermal-based techniques, in addition to iontophoresis and microneedle-based ideas, have shown considerable promise in improving transdermal drug delivery of many treatments.
Keywords: Transdermal delivery, Patches, Topical delivery, penetration enhancer.
