A BRIEF REVIEW ON SOLANUM XANTHOCARPUM (KANTAKARI)

ABSTRACT
Solanum xanthocarpum is commonly known as the Indian night shade or Yellow berried night shade in English and kantakari in Sanskrit. It belongs to the family Solanaceae. In Ayurvedic medicines, it is considered as an important herb. Solanum xanthocarpum is an herbaceous plant which grows along roadsides and wastelands throughout India in dry conditions. The phytochemical screening of the plant showed a presence of alkaloids, sterols, saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, carbohydrates, fatty acids, and amino acids. The pharmacological study of the plant showed that it possesses antiasthmatic, antipyretic, antitumor, anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, hypotensive, anti-anaphylactic, and aphrodisiac activities. The current
review provides a updated information on the botanical description, , and pharmacological activities of Solanum xanthocarpum.
