Abstract

OVERVIEW OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF ILLEGAL PRESCRIPTION DRUGS GLOBALLY: CURRENT INITIATIVES AND FUTURE PROSPECTS

Deepika Bharti* and Rama Shukla

ABSTRACT

Illegal prescription is a challenging ethical issue because, on the other hand, imposing severe limits on drug access could have negative consequences for the community. According to the report, India was among the top ten countries reporting the highest opioid seizures in the world in 2019. India's opium haul was the fourth largest in the world in 2019, while its morphine and heroin haul was the seventh largest. This paper presents the results of a global research of drug prescribing and dispensing. The number of persons consuming drugs increased by 22% between 2010 and 2019, owing in part to worldwide population growth. Current forecasts suggest an 11% increase in the number of persons who take drugs globally by 2030, with a 40% increase in Africa due to its rapidly rising and young population. Furthermore, during the pandemic, most countries reported an increase in cannabis use. Cannabis use has surged, according to 42% of health professionals surveyed in 77 countries. During the same time period, there was also an increase in the non-medical usage of prescription pharmaceuticals. The goal of this literature review is to identify the prevalence of medication misuse and to describe the underlying conditions that lead to drug misuse.
