Abstract

THERAPEUTIC EVIDENCE OF CURCUMIN AGAINST NON COMMUNICABLE DISEASES: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Background: Curcumin is a natural product that has been shown to be effective against non communicable diseases in various clinical studies. The therapeutic effects of curcumin includes that it controls inflammation, cell growth and apoptosis, being thus useful to prevent and treat some diseases because of its anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities and excellent safety profile. This study aims to determine the Clinical effects of curcumin in various noncommunicable diseases using systematic review approach. Methods: A systematic review methodology is adopted for undertaking detailed analysis of the effects of curcumin against non communicable diseases. The results presented in this paper is an outcome of extracting the findings of the studies selected from the articles published in international databases including Google Scholar, PubMed and MeSH. These databases were thoroughly searched, and the relevant publications were selected based on the plausible keywords, in accordance with the study aims, as follows: prevalence, curcumin, clinical features, non communicable diseases. Results: The results are derived based on several clinical studies on curcumin consumption in various forms, highlighting that curcumin had a positive effects improving cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, alzheimers disease, skin diseases, asthma, chronic kidney disease, obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, anxiety and depression along with reduced side effects. Conclusion: This clinical overview highlighted that there is a promising potential of turmeric and its major constituents on different non communicable diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, cancer, arthritis, obesity and various other diseases.
