Abstract

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF PRIMARY DYSMENORRHOEA (UDAVARTHINI YONI VYAPATH)– A CASE REPORT

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Primary dysmenorrhea means painful menstruation characteristically begins when adolescents attains ovulatory cycles without any underlying pelvic pathology usually within 6-12 months of menarche. Dysmenorrhea is leading to the cause of gynecological morbidity in reproductive age regardless of nationality and socio economic status. WHO estimated that dysmenorrhea is the most important cause of chronic pelvic pain. The prevalence of dysmenorrhea in adolescent girls ranges between 50-87.8%. Signs and symptoms closely related with udavartini yoni vyapath. It is one among the Vataja Yoni vyapath caused due to Adhomargavega dharana which causes Apana vata aggravation. The aggravated Apana vata takes the Artava in upward direction causing different kinds of pelvic pain. When this retrograde Artava comes down and expelled out through the vagina female will feels free from pain. The treatment mentioned in classics is Vatashamana, where Basti is consider as the best line of treatment. For Vata, Sneha Basti will be the best mode of treatment, hence Kashmaryadi Ghrita which is mentioned in the context of Vataja Yoni Vyapath Chikitsa which is mainly having Vatahara and Brihmana dravyas was selected for the matra basti in this study to assess the effect in reducing the pain during menstruation. Materials and methods: A patient aged 22 years with complaints of pain abdomen, low back and lower limbs on the day of menstruation since menarche came to our OPD of Prasuti Tantra and Stree Roga, Sri Dharmasthalana Manjunatheshwara College of Ayurveda and Hospital, Hassan, Karnataka diagnosed by clinical examination and USG shows no sonological abnormalities. Matra basti with Kashmaryadi Ghrita 70 ml given for 2 consecutive cycles starting from 7th day of menstruation. Result: During 1st follow up subject expressed 30-40% relief pain and round 80% relief after completion of second cycle. Conclusion: Kashmarydi Ghrita Matra basti was showed better result in treating symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea.
