THE EFFECT OF CHAMOMILE TEA ON SLEEP PATTERNS AND DIETARY PRACTICES IN GERIATRIC INSTITUTIONALIZED SUBJECTS

R. Durga, Lally Hanna Luke* and Deepa C. Philip

ABSTRACT

Sleep is a vital component of health and is essential for mental and physical well-being. Impaired or disrupted sleep has been shown to cause poor concentration, reduced energy levels, altered immune function, poor wound healing, increased risk of depression or anxiety, and accidents and falls. Chamomile is a daisy (Asteracea) - like flower that grows indigenously in Europe, Asia, Africa, and cultivated in North America. This herb has been used as herbal remedies for thousands of years. The composite flower is white in colour with a yellowish orange centre. The purpose of this study was to see if "Effect of Chamomile Tea on Sleep Pattern and Dietary Practices in Institutional Geriatric Subjects" was true. Creed Integrated Old Age Home in Parangipet was the site of the research. Thirty samples from the geriatric population were chosen for the investigation. The 30 samples were split into two groups: Group I (the experimental group) and Group II (the control group). For a month before bedtime, the experimental group was given 2 grammes of chamomile in 100 millilitres of hot water. All of the participants received nutrition education. The effectiveness of chamomile tea was assessed using the PSQI before and after chamomile tea supplementation, and the results were statistically connected. The current study used a quantitative experimental design.
