ABSTRACT
Jarachikitsa is the branch of Ashtang Ayurveda mentioned by Acharya Vagbhatta. This branch deals with various Jara vyadhi (old age disease) and the care of the elderly. On the one hand, it provides anti-aging treatment, while on the other, it manages age-related illnesses. According to Acharyas, Vradhavastha is suggestive after 70 years of age but in today’s perspective old age is counted after 60 years of age. Old age is caused by deteriorating cellular and tissue structures causing disorders related to Cardiovascular System, Gastrointestinal System, Respiratory System, etc. Lifestyle change in the modern world has increased the prevalence of diseases associated with old age. According to a United Nations report, the proportion of individuals
aged 60 and more in India’s population is expected to increase by 20% by 2050. This expected increase of Old age population suggests we find new ways for dealing with geriatric illness. Through Panchakarma treatment, Ayurveda may effectively manage age-related issues. It helps in managing Physical disorders like Hypertension, Diabetes, Constipation, BPH, Osteo-Arthritis, Indigestion, Stroke, Parkinsonism, etc as well as Mental Disorders like Insomnia, Anxiety, Depression, etc. Panchakarma is the process of bio-purification of the body, which aids in the proper functioning of the body by eliminating aggravated doshas from the body through procedures Like Snehana, Swedana, Basti, Nasya, Shirodhara, etc. It also helps in balancing the vitiated doshas with the help of Langhana, Deepana, and Pachana therapy. So, Panchakarma therapy could be a promising therapy for managing physical and mental illness of old age people. It also helps in delaying Jara (Old age) if given periodically in a holistic approach (Swasthavritta).
