ABSTRACT
In this review article we have focus on the worldwide use of traditional plants for the treatment of infectious diseases which is caused by microorganisms. In initial twentieth century, the discovery of antibiotics gives an implement against the microbial infections but due to various drug resistance and adverse effects on host including hypersensitivity, immune suppression and allergic reactions appear by antibiotics make a need of natural medicines with safe and better therapeutic effect. Medicinal plants from natural origin carry secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, steroids, tannins, and phenolic compounds which is capable of applying antimicrobial activity due to several mechanisms. These active constituents appear its therapeutic
effect by demolition of cell membrane of microbe, membrane proteins, enzymes located on cell membrane of microbes etc. Dissimilar extracts of medicinal plants with minimum inhibitory concentration opposed to microbial infections reach the need of safe and methodical therapeutic agent against infectious diseases.
Keywords: Antimicrobial activity, Minimum inhibitory concentration, Secondary metabolites, Extracts.
