PHYTOCHEMICAL, PHARMACOLOGICAL AND THERAPEUTIC ACTIVITY OF VITIS QUADRANGULARIS WALL. - A REVIEW

ABSTRACT
Vitis quadrangularis Wall., Asthishrinkhala, is a succulent perennial climber of family Vitaceae, found many places in India and also other region of the world such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh. It is a valuable medicinal plant and is being used as a drug in various disease since ancient period throughout the world. Ayurveda advocates use of drugs as a whole but recently scientists are using the active phytochemical compounds of plants for therapeutic action. Many of the plant extracts have been prove to possess pharmacological actions. Today, medicinal plant research has increased throughout the world and the herbs are
potentially used in various therapies. Vitis quadrangularis Wall contains such phytochemicals carotenoids, triterpenoids, flavonoids, tannins, phenols and vitamin C which have some pharmacological activities such as antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anthelmintic, free radical scavenging, anti microbial, bone healing, diuretic and analgesic as well as potential medicinal effects. Vitis quadrangularis Wall. widely used in Ayurveda as bone fracture healing, general tonic and useful in anorexia, dyspepsia, colic, skin diseases, leprosy, hemorrhage, tumors, swellings etc. In the present study, the details of information about the plant Vitis quadrangularis is gathered from various books, published research articles and from few search engines and made an attempt to highlight phytochemicals, pharmacological activities and various therapeutic activities of Vitis quadrangularis.
