ABSTRACT
Background: Some of plants-foods are commonly consumed in the Adamawa region (high savannah agroecological zone), North West and West regions (high plateau agroecological zone) of Cameroon. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different staple dietary preparations from two agroecological zones of Cameroon on acute and chronic gastric ulcers induced in male albino Wistar rats. Methods: Diets were tested on acute and chronic gastric ulcers. After treatments, animals were sacrified, some parameters were evaluated, inhibition and healing percentage, gastric acidity assessed, histological examination realized and oxidative stress parameters were measured. Results: Different staple diets inhibited induced gastric ulcers as confirmed by histopathological observations, significantly reduced gastric acidity (P<0.01), increased mucus production and antioxidant (GSH, CAT and NO) levels compared to the standard diet. Conclusions: The results revealed that some local diets have cytoprotective and ulcer healing effects which might be exerted through inhibition of acid secretion, stimulation of gastric mucus production and enhancement of antioxidant status.
