ROLE AND IMPACT OF COSMECEUTICALS IN CHARAKOKTA VARNYA MAHAKASHAYA – A PRAGMATIC VIEW

ABSTRACT
The symbiosis between cosmetics, cosmeceuticals and Ayurveda is archaic and concept of beauty is a subject of socio–medical importance. One of the ways of expression of beauty is through the appearance of the complexion of skin. Ayurveda has an ideal role to play in the cosmeceutical field with unique concepts and applied aspects. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of dravyas mentioned in varnya mahakashaya of Acharya Charaka for maintainance of skin complexion. Acharya charaka states group of ten dravyas that can be used to obtain glowing skin. It includes Chandana, Tunga, Padmaka, Ushira, Madhuka, Manjishta, Sariva, Payasya, Sita and Lata (Durva). These drugs can be used either individually or in combination for cosmeceutical purpose. The pharmacological properties of these drugs indicate that apart from complexion promotion action, they have various medicinal properties. Most of them are prescribed for skin diseases and scientifically proved that they have anti-inflammatory, Anti bacterial, Anti septic, Anti ulcer Anti comedogenic and improves microcirculation properties. In this current research paper the rasapanchaka, phytoconstituents, mode of action and interrelationship of pharmacological activities of varnya mahakashaya dravyas are rationally analysed and highlighted.
