ABSTRACT
This paper presents the preparation of hydrophilic matrices using chondroitin sulfate (CS) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) for the controlled release of theophylline. For this purpose, seven formulations were prepared with the variable content of CS and HPMC by the compression method. We explored evaluations regarding mean weight, friability, hardness, disintegration assay, and hydration index. In vitro dissolution studies were conducted to identify the best concentration or association of natural and synthetic polymers for the controlled release of theophylline. Results showed that the addition of CS in F and G formulations allowed better control of the theophylline release. However, only formulation F showed values in accordance with the standards established by the pharmacopeia. The assays resulted in a formulation with potential for improvement of theophylline controlled release characteristics.
