ABSTRACT
Essentials oils of orange (Citrus aurantium) peel has high activity in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Is objective to determine the formulation of mouthwash from the essential oils of orange (C. aurantium) with the highest inhibitory on the growth of S. aureus. Methods: This research was an experimental in-vitro study. The mouthwash was formulated with orange (C. aurantium) peel essential oil, extraction of essential oils by using Soxhlet apparatus technique; organoleptic test and physical mouth wash formula test was also conducted. Mouthwash formulations were made from the essential oils in the concentrations of 1, 2, 3, and 5%. Minimum inhibitory concentration was determined on different concentration of formulated mouthwash. Results: Orange peel Essential oils mouthwash formulation showed antibacterial activity at the concentrations of 1, 2, 3, and 5% (formula I-IV); the recommended mouthwash concentration was 3% (formula III) due to its highest antibacterial activity and also good visual appearance. Conclusion: Mouth wash formulation from essential oils of orange (C. aurantium) peel begins to show inhibition of the growth of S. aureus bacteria at the concentration of 3% essential oils (formula III), with inhibition against the growth of S. aureus is provide good results of minimum inhibitory concentration.
