ABSTRACT
Inflammation is defensive response that is characterized by the redness, pain, heat, swelling and loss of function in injured area. The aim of the present study was the hydroalcoholic extraction of Vitex negundo leaves (Family: Verbenacea) followed by screening of its anti-inflammatory activity by in vitro methods. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using albumin denaturation assay and proteinase inhibitory assay, at different concentrations. Diclofenac sodium was used as standard drug. The result showed that hydroalcoholic extract at different concentration ranges from 60-500μg/ml significantly protects the heat induced protein denaturation. At the concentration of 60-500μg/ml, hydroalcoholic extract of leaves
of Vitex negundo showed significant of proteinase inhibitory action. The results revealed that the hydroalcoholic extract of Vitex negundo can be a potential source of anti-inflammatory agents.
