ASSESSMENT OF NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND DRUG RELATED PROBLEMS IN RENAL IMPAIRED PATIENTS –A CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY

ABSTRACT
Kidney disease is one of global health problems requiring early detection and treatment to prevent its progression. Diabetes and HTN have been reported to be the most common risk factor for kidney disease. The main aim of the study is to assess nutritional status and drug related problems in renal impaired patients. The method we used is cross-sectional study and was conducted in 125 patients by considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria for a period of six months. The results obtained are as follows overall 125 patients were included in the study. Out of 125 patients, 149 DRP’s were identified. The DRP’s are as follows they are untreated indication, Failure to receive drugs, ADR’s, Drug interaction, Drug use without indication.
Most commonly used drugs were Amlodipine (47), Metoprolol (18), Furosemide (88), and PPI’s such as Pantoprazole (82). The most prevailing disease were HTN (27.20%), Diabetes (13.60%), both HTN & Diabetes (29.60%) and Coronary artery disease (0.80%). The conclusion of the study includes Drug related problems (DRP)’s occurred in majority of all patients. So, it is the responsibility of clinical pharmacist to identify DRP. For better clinical outcome in kidney disease patient’s management of nutrition plays a key role in kidney disease patients. So, proper diet should be taken by consulting nephrologists and monitor by dietician to avoid nutritional error’s. Regular counseling should be provided in order to prevent malnutrition.
