A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY ON RISK FACTORS AND COMPLICATIONS IN GERIATRIC PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT
Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by a high blood glucose level over a prolonged period of time. The main aim of the study is to evaluate the risk factors and complications in geriatric patients with Type 2 DM. A hospital based retrospective study was conducted for a duration of 6 months in the department of General Medicine, Pushpagiri Medical College Hospital, Thiruvalla, which collected two years data of the IP patients. The sample size for the study was 131(64males and 67 females) patients above 65 years of age with type 2 DM. The results showed that the majority of the patients
belong to the young-old category (65-74 years). The comorbidity study showed that, Hypertension was seen in majority of the patients. Nephropathy was the most seen microvascular diabetic complication. The study found out significant association between certain risk factors and complications and also between HbA1C and certain complications such a retinopathy and UTI.
