ABSTRACT
Deferiprone is chemically 3-hydroxy-1,2-dimethyl pyridine-4-one[1,5] it
is an oral iron-chelating agent used to treat transfusion-related, chronic
iron overload. Deferiprone has been linked to a low rate of Transitory
serum aminotransferase elevations during treatment and too rare cases
of clinically apparent liver injury. It is an orally bioavailable bidentate
ligand with iron-chelating activity. Deferiprone binds to iron in a 3:1
(ligand: iron) molecular ratio. By binding to iron, it can remove excess
iron from the body. Deferiprone is a member of the class of 4-
pyridones that is pyridine-4(1H)-one substituted at positions 1 and 2 by
methyl groups and position 3 by a hydroxy group. A lipid-soluble ironchelator
used for the treatment of thalassemia. It has a role as a
protective agent and iron chelator. Some analytical methods of quantitative determination of
Deferiprone in a pharmaceutical formulation like UV, RP-HPLC, LC-MS/MS, HPLC
MS/MS, UFLC.
Keywords: Deferiprone, thalassemia major, UV, RP-HPLC.
