SCIENTIFIC REVIEW OF ADATHODAI MANAPPAGU IN MANAGEMENT AND PREVENTION OF NOVEL CORONA VIRUS

ABSTRACT

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is defined as an illness caused by a novel coronavirus, now called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV- 2). COVID 19 outbreak has thrown up the most significant challenge during recent times to the medical professionals and researchers to counter the disease condition effectively. As there is no specific treatment modality against Novel Coronavirus disease, usage of several traditional medicines has been used to treat and manage along with modern interventions. Siddha medicines are an advantage to humankind indicated in treating various kinds of infectious fevers, Dengue, Respiratory infections, pneumonia, etc. Justicia adathoda.Linn, commonly known as Adathoda belongs to family Acanthaceae. This plant has been used in the Siddha system of medicine in India over 2000 years. Adathodai is a decent source of pyrroloquinoline alkaloids such as vasicine, vasicol, vasicinone, vasicinol, vasicinolone, adhatonine, etc. which are the chief ingredients of different extracts of the plant. Aim and objective: To establish therapeutic efficacy of Adathoda Manappagu against COVID 19 by scientific review. Material and Methods: Various literary evidence and scientific research articles were collected from Siddha literature’s, PubMed, Google Scholar etc. Discusion: On the basis of review, Adathoda Manappagu has antiviral, antipyretic, bronchodilator, anti-thrombolytic, antioxidant, Immunomodulator, anti- inflammatory, antibacterial, antitubercular, hepatoprotective activities for treating Covid 19 disease and its complications. Conclusion: Hence, I conclude that Adathoda Manappagu can be expansively using in the prevention and management of COVID 19 based on this scientific review.
