ABSTRACT
The prospect of this article is to present comprehensive information related to mucoadhesion and mucoadhesive drug delivery systems. Mucoadhesive drug delivery systems interact with the mucus layer covering the mucosal epithelial surface, and mucin molecules and increased the residence time of the dosage form at the site of absorption. The drug which have local action or those which have maximum absorption in gastrointestinal tract (GIT) required increased duration of stay in GIT. Thus, mucoadhesive dosage forms are advantageous inincreasing the drug plasma concentration and also therapeutic activity. In this regard this article includes detailed
information about mucosa- the anatomy and physiology, the mechanisms and theories related to mucoadhesion, evaluation parameters of mucoadhesive dosage forms, mucoadhesive polymers and novel approaches related to mucoadhesive drug delivery system, the potential merits and demerits of mucoadhesive drug delivery as well as mucoadhesive dosage forms are also discussed.
Keywords: Mucoadhesion, Theories, factors, evaluation parameters, polymers.
