CONCEPT OF SELF-MEDICATION PRACTICE AND ITS CURRENT CHALLENGES: AN OVERVIEW

ABSTRACT
Self-medication practice is widespread throughout the world, but it is especially prevalent in developing countries like India, where it provides easy access to drugs, and a low-cost alternative for people who cannot afford the high cost of clinical care. Past experience with drugs and treatment of mild symptoms being the most popular reasons for self medication practice. The youth all over the world are vulnerable to self-medication because they are heavily influenced by the media and the internet. Acne, facial pain, congestion, runny nose, fever, headache, sore throat, cough and cold, pain, diarrhoea and stomach discomfort are the conditions, where self medications are
commonly preferred for. various research studies stated that, globally, almost 50% of pregnant women use medicine in the first few weeks of pregnancy. Epidemiological studies demonstrate that even when a chronic illness is diagnosed, patients seek only occasional professional advice and believe they are capable of managing and maintaining their own health. Self medication, without medical guidance may result in greater probability of inappropriate, incorrect, or undue therapy, missed diagnosis, delays in appropriate treatment, pathogen resistance and increased morbidity. The adverse consequences of such practices should always be emphasized to the community and necessary steps to be taken to curb it. This review article focused on the self-medication of drugs, their use, its safety and reason for using it and the emerging challenges.
