TOBACCO USE CESSATION AND PREVENTION – A REVIEW

ABSTRACT
Tobacco use is a major preventable cause of premature death and disease, currently leading to over five million deaths each year worldwide. Smoking or chewing tobacco can have a profound effect on overall health, as well as oral health. Oral health professionals play a key role in promoting a tobacco-free lifestyle. They should advise their patients not to smoke; and strengthen the anti-smoking message and refer patients to smoking cessation services. Dentists are in a unique position to educate and motivate patients about the dangers of tobacco to their oral health and system, as well as to provide intervention programs as part of general patient care. Quit smoking is
needed to reduce tobacco-related illness and death. Quit smoking strategies include 5 A and 5 R’s method, quit lines and pharmacy. In addition, smoking cessation programs should be implemented at community, regional, and national levels. Different policies should be used to better control tobacco use. Governments should use tobacco control measures to reduce tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke. In addition, there should be access to pamphlets, brochures, continuous teaching aids about smoking cessation.
