PHARMACOGNOSTIC, PHYTOCHEMICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL REVIEW OF CELOSIA ARGENTEA L.

ABSTRACT
Celosia argentea L. belonging to the family Amaranthaceae is wide used as ancient medication with an extended history in China. Over 79 compounds from this plant were isolated and identified, principally as well as phenols, saponins, peptides, fatty acids, and amino acids of that saponins have been thought of because the characteristics and active constituents of Celosia argentea. Celosia argentea plays an vital role in traditional medicine to heal several disorders such as jaundice, mouth sores, diarrohea, fever, itching, wounds, inflammation, bleeding nose, bleeding piles, cold, hematological, gynecological, rheumatoid arthritis, snakebite, uterus disorder and as an abortifacient. A number of phytoconstituents are isolated from Celosia argentea which includes tannins, flavonoids, phenols, steroids, peptides, cardiac glycosides,
lipids, carbohydrates, phenolic acids, phytosterols, cristatain, betalains, nicotinic acid, alkaloids which includes moroidin, celosian, amaranthin, isoamaranthin, betalamic acid. This plant has potential pharmacological activities like anti- inflammatory, anti-oxidants, anti- bacterial, anti- cancer, hepatoprotective, wound healing, anti-microbial activity, anti- diabetic, anti nociceptive, anti-mitotic, anti-infectious, immunological, anti-urolithiatic, effects which are described in different parts of the plant extract. The aim of this review is to provide important information of the pharmacognotic, phytochemical and pharmacological study with exploration on the C. argentea species to provide the future scope for the research work on the Celosia argentea.
