COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW ON TINOSPORA CORDIFOLIA

ABSTRACT
The heart-leaved moonseed or guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) is a species in the Menispermaceae. There are different varieties like Tinospora convolvulacaea, Tinospora cordifolia, Tinospora fosbergii, Tinospora verrucosa. It consist of phytochemicals like alkaloids, phytosterols, glycosides and many other chemical compounds. The constituents like tinosporaside, tinospora acid, tinosporine, tembeterine, berberine, jatrorrhizine, palmatine can be isolated from the plant. Ayurveda, a natural system of medicine originated in India more than 5000 years ago and it is called as “Mother of all healing”. It provides natural and holistic approach to physical and mental health, hence various plants are used for the treatment of diseases. It is one of
the important medicinal plant used in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of cold, fever, diabetes and rheumatoid arthiritis. The review mainly represents the pharmacognostical, phytochemical and pharmacological activity of the plant.
