ABSTRACT
The most important drug delivery route is undoubtedly the oral route. It offers advantages of convenience of administration and potential manufacturing cost savings. Mouth dissolving tablets are ideal for many groups of patients including geriatrics, pediatrics, psychiatrics and for those people who have difficulty in swallowing These tablet dosage forms are popularly known as mouth dissolving, fast melting, fast dissolving, orodispersible according to inventors. Recent advances in novel drug delivery system aims to enhance safety and efficacy of drug molecule by formulating a convenient dosage form for administration and to achieve better patient compliance. Orodispersible
tablets are solid unit dosage form which when placed in the oral cavity swiftly disintergrates or dissolves without the need of water. According to European Pharmacopoeia, the ODT should disperse/disintegrate in less than three minutes. ODT can be prepared by many technologies like lyophilization, molding, spray drying, cotton candy and compression etc. These techniques render disintegration of tablet rapidly and dissolving mouth without chewing or additional water intake. But among these technologies direct compression is most convenient and cheap way to produce tablets with sufficient structural integrity. The current article is focused on ideal characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, various technologies developed for ODT, evaluation methods along with recent research and future potential.
Keywords: ODTs, Lyophilization, Disintergrates, Pediatrics, Spray drying, Molding.
