ABSTRACT
Microbiologically contaminated hand surfaces can act as natural reservoirs of pathogenic microorganisms and are the primary cause of healthcare associated infections. Use of hand sanitizers has become an essential in clinical practice for the prevention of disease transmission among the populations. Alcohol based hand sanitizer claim to kill 99.99% microbes and most effective is due to their denaturing ability of proteins. An attempt has been made to formulate alcohol based gel hand sanitizer and its characterization with effective way of tulsi oil and vitamin E which has anti-viral action and antioxidant property respectively to maintain hand hygiene. Formulation contains several other ingredients such as emollients, moisturizers, fragrances,
humectants and other active ingredients. Different formulations are prepared and evaluated. Optimized formulation is subjected to different evaluation parameters like colour, clarity test, odour, pH and skin irritancy test. The formulation was clear and light blue in colour with mild odour. The pH of herbal hand sanitizer found to be 6.7±0.2 and viscosity found to be 0.42±0.5 poise with no irritation effect on skin. The formulation efficiency was checked by using the hand gel on volunteers. The aim of present work is to develop gel hand sanitizer which vaporizes quickly after applications leaving no trace on hands as in case of hand rub gels. The results from the present work demonstrated and support effectiveness of hand sanitizer in all manners.
