STUDY OF PRESCRIPTION PATTERNS OF ANTI-EPILEPTIC MEDICATION’S IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT
This study is to evaluate the prescription patterns of anti-epileptic drugs in in-patients at a tertiary care hospital. Study has been conducted in tertiary care hospital. During the 6 months data was collected of a total of 100 patients from the in-patient department of Neurology, who were prescribed anti-epileptics, and those who attained the inclusion and exclusion criteria were chosen for the study, the study was carried out for 6 months. A total of 100 patients were in the study, out of which 73% were male and 27% female in the department of neurology. The anti-epileptic drug Levetiracetam (57%) was the most frequent drug used as monotherapy. The frequent dual
combination therapy which was used was Levetiracetam with clobazam (16%) and the common triple-drug combination which was used was Levetiracetam with clobazam and phenytoin (2%). Thus from the study owned by us, we have concluded that Levetiracetam was the repeated drug used as monotherapy, Levetiracetam with clobazam and the common triple- drug combination which was used was Levetiracetam with clobazam and phenytoin. Poly therapy was very common practice in our tertiary care center. The patient should be educated about the rational use of the drug to decrease the risk of Epilepsy.
