ABSTRACT
Banana starch from Musa paradisiaca L. was extracted and evaluated as a disintegrant in herbal Calcium Sennoside tablet formulation. A comparative study was carried out with extracted starch and commercially available potato and maize starch using parameters including sensory, physicochemical, functional properties, and powder characteristics. The extracted starch was found to be comparable to the commercially used starches. The extracted banana starch demonstrated high swelling power and water absorption capacity, and low solubility, indicating its disintegration property. The calcium sennoside tablets
were prepared by conventional wet granulation technique using Banana, Potato and Maize Starch as the disintegrant. All the three batches of tablets passed the required tests including hardness, friability and weight variation. The tablets containing Banana Starch were observed to have the best disintegration time proving the potential usefulness of Banana Starch as a better disintegrant.
