ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a serious metabolic disorder occurs when the patient’s body has difficulty in regulating the amount of glucose in blood. The main aim of the study is to evaluate the prescribing trends and clinical outcomes in geriatric patients with type 2 DM. A hospital based retrospective study was conducted for duration of 6 months in the department of General Medicine, Pushpagiri Medical College Hospital, Thiruvalla, which collected two years data of the IP patients. The sample size for the study was 131(64males and 67 females) patients above 65 years of age with type 2 DM. The results shows that the majority of the patients belong to the young-old category (65-74 years). Insulin based therapies were used mostly in elderly population to attain glycemic control. In Oral Hypoglycemic agents, the most commonly used drug was Metformin. Based on our findings, the study suggests that the treatment pattern was effective in improving HbA1C levels.
