Veena Jawale and Priyanka Kurkute*

ABSTRACT

In Ayurvedic classics most of menstrual disorders have been described under the heading of Artavdusti and Asrigdara. The menstrual blood which resembles the Shashakshruk Pratimam (blood of rabbit) or Laksha Rasa and that which does not stain the cloth is considered as characteristic features of Shudhaartava any altered presentation considered as ‘Asrigdara’ which is explained in Ayurveda.[2] It may be correlated with condition of menorrhagia. According to Achrya Charaka and Acharya Chakrapani Rakta (blood) get mixed with Raja (menstrual blood), thus the quantity of Raja increases[1] Acharya Charaka has described four types of Asrigdara.[1] Acharya Sushruta has mentioned all types of Asrigdara.[2] It is mainly due to vitiation of Vata and Pitta Dosha hence, the treatment should be based on the use of drugs which are having predominance of Kashaya Rasa and Pitta – Shamak properties.[1] The Ayurvedic management mentioned can be recommended as a safer, feasible and effective therapy for the management of heavy menstrual bleeding.

Keywords: Pradirana, Raja, Asrigdara, Heavy menstrual bleeding, menorrhagia.
