SCIENTIFIC BASIS OF SELECTING EXTRACTION METHODS USED IN METABOLIC PROFILING: A REVIEW ARTICLE
Ozioko Paul Chijioke* and Aminu Ibrahim
ABSTRACT
In this review, 33 articles published not earlier than 2010 were reviewed. Metabolic profiling has to do with the study of chemical processes that are associated to and involve metabolites. It also involves the use of analytical methods in measurement and interpretation of various endogenous low molecular weight and intermediate metabolites from their samples especially the natural products. These metabolites are the end and/or intermediate products of cellular activities, and could be primary or secondary metabolites. Metabolic profiling has been applied in many different fields. For instance, it is of great relevance and necessity to pharmaceuticals
where it is used in toxicity assessment. Different analytical techniques are used in metabolic profiling. Gas/Liquid chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography are powerful techniques in this field especially when linked with mass spectrometry and NMR.
Keywords: Metabolic profiling, Metabolomes, Metabolites, Extraction, Analytical techniques and Natural products.
