MANAGEMENT OF PRIMARY SJOGREN’S SYNDROME THROUGH AYURVEDA – A CASE REPORT

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Autoimmunity is a state of the body in which the body’s immune system fails to distinguish between ‘self’ and ‘non-self’ and reacts by the formation of autoantibodies against one’s own tissue antigens. Sjögren syndrome is a chronic autoimmune progressive exocrinopathy distinguished by lymphatic infiltration of lacrimal and salivary glands. Primary Sjögren’s syndrome is characterized by Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye), Xerostomia1. In Ayurveda primary Sjögren’s syndrome is compared to Shuska Akshi Paka based on signs and symptoms Xerostomia is considered as Mukha Shosha. This is the case report of 40 years old female patient complaints of
foreign body sensation, itching in eyes, dryness of eyes, sensitivity to light, dryness of mouth and difficulty in swallowing since 2 years. Meterials and Methods: The subject who approached Shalakya tantra opd of government Ayurveda medical college Bengaluru with symptoms foreign body sensation, itching in eyes, dryness of eyes, sensitivity to light, dryness of mouth and difficulty in swallowing since 2 years. Patient was reviewed systematically and treatment modalities like Yashtimadhu + Saindhava ksheera seka, Tarpana with Jeevantyadi gritha, Yashtimadhu+ ksheera gandoosha, Vidaryadi lehya with milk were adopted. Results: The subject showed marked improvement symptomatically and marked changes in different diagnostic tests. Discussion: This autoimmune condition is due to Rasa and Kapha Kshaya so there will be reduction in Snehamsha hence the treatment adopter here is Vatahara and Rasayana which nourishes the body as well helps in managing the condition.
