ABSTRACT
Varmam is one of the unique branch of Siddha system of medicine. Varmam therapy used for treating all kinds of ailments including emergencies, bone fracture, war wounds since time immemorial. The varmam treatment is stimulation and regularization of the Pranan (energy) in particular varmam points through the channels called the Naadis. Varmam therapy includes stimulation of Varmam points, Adangal techniques, Internal medicines and External medicines. Objectives: This paper focuses on the phytochemical standardization study of the internal medicine, namely “Athimathura chooranam”. This chooranam indicated for bone fractures, cough, and inflammation, burning sensation of stomach and body and other related varmam injuries. Results: The total ash-3.65%, Loss on drying at 105°C –
12.78%, Acid insoluble ash 0.19%, Water soluble and alcohol soluble ash and volatile oil are 26.88%, 28.02% and 1.50% respectively. In HPTLC analysis, the maximum Rf values and colour of bands obtained at different wavelengths and the area of spots occurred at 0.46(6 μl),0.45 Rf(12 μl) in 254 nm, in 366nm 0.16Rf(6 μl), 0.26Rf(12 μl) and in 565nm maximum Rf occurred in 0.91Rf(6 μl), 0.92(μl). The Rf value indicates the active ingredients of medicine in various quantity and keyfor the medical benefits of this chooranam. Conclusion: The treatment of varmam therapy given importance to medicines also, since the internal medicine standardization and not yet done before. Therefore, this area will be helpful for further clinical trials of varmam therapy with internal medicines exclusively for varmam injuries.
