ABSTRACT
The goal of the drug delivery system is a provide a therapeutic amount of drug to the proper site in the body and also to achieve and maintain the desired drug concentration. This could be achieved through mucoadhesive microbeads. Drug actions can be improved by new drug delivery system, such as mucoadhesive system. The mucosa has a rich blood supply and it is highly permeable. Mucoadhesion drug delivery system (MDDS) has much benefits such as prolong retention time, fast uptake and increased bioavailability of active substances. The mucoadhesion is defined as the adhesion between the two materials in which one is biological material and other one is polymeric materials. Mucoadhesive is done by using mucoadhesive polymers. MDDS is a novel drug delivery system for the local as well as systemic delivery of
various drugs. In this review we have discussed the various types of mucoadhesive dosage forms along with various type of mucoadhesive polymer. This review provides knowledge about the mucoadhesive microbeads by discussing briefly the mechanism of mucoadhesion, site for mucoadhesion, factors affecting mucoadhesion, preparation methods of microbeads, evaluation parameters of microbeads.
