ABSTRACT

Sacoglottis gabonensis (Humiriaceae) is a medicinal plant used in Côte d'Ivoire in the treatment of Buruli ulcer. To verify its activity, the total aqueous extract of the bark of S. gabonensis was administered daily, orally for 28 days, to three batches of Wistar rats at doses of 3.5; 35 and 350 mg/kg body weight (bw). A control batch received distilled water. blood samples were taken on days D0 and D28 in order to determine the effect of the extract on hemostatic parameters, namely the levels of platelets, fibrinogen, calcium, prothrombin and the activated partial thromboplastin time. The results showed that the repeated administration of the total aqueous extract of the stem bark of S. gabonensis causes a slight increase in blood platelets at the end of the experiments. Regarding the endogenous coagulation pathway and calcium, no disturbance was observed in any of the rats treated with the extract during the four weeks of administration. In contrast, the total aqueous extract caused a significant variation in fibrinogen and the exogenous coagulation pathway in all the treated batches compared to the control. In sum, this study revealed that the total aqueous extract of the stem bark of S. gabonensis Engl. may be slightly harmful to the exogenous coagulation pathway and to fibrinogen when administered over a relatively long period of time.
