PREVALENCE AND SEVERITY OF MENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS AND THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN PRE AND POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN AT TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT
Menopause is permanent decline of regular menstrual cycle and an end of a woman’s reproductive life. There are three stages of Menopausal period. They are Pre, peri and post menopause. It is a natural process that all woman experiences because of the gradual decline of primordial ovarian follicles by age factor. Our study aimed to assess the prevalence and awareness of menopausal symptoms among women in tertiary care hospital. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a 75 Premenopausal and 75 postmenopausal women in 35 – 70 years age group. The mean age of pre and postmenopausal women were 45.8 and 57.2 years respectively. The menopause rating scale used to measure the symptoms symptoms. The study found that, postmenopausal women were highly affected with the symptoms. Joint and muscular discomforts (52.6%), Hot flush sweating in 31.2%, irritability in 28.6% and sexual problem in 19.3%. were the major symptoms reported. The symptoms affect the QOL of the postmenopausal women. The education about menopause symptoms and knowledge will make them easy to manage the symptoms. When women understand gain knowledge about menopause symptoms. They will seek medical care and improve their quality of life.
