APHANAMIXIS POLYSTACHYA (WALL.) PARKER, PHYTOCHEMISTRY, PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES AND MEDICINAL USES: AN OVERVIEW

ABSTRACT
Several medicinal plants, traditionally used for thousands of years, are
present in a group of herbal preparations of the Indian traditional
health care system and extensive research has been carried out from
past decades to discover potential constituents from plant sources.
Among the medicinal plants used for their therapeutic (action) effect in
Ayurvedic Rasayana, one of them i.e. Aphanamixis polystachya has
renowned status and has been thoroughly investigated. In India and in
other Asian countries it is used as traditional medicinal plant. It
belongs to Meliaceae family. The plant was studied in most of the
world because of its high potential medicinal value. It is widely used in
traditional medicine for the variety of ailments like antihelmentic, hepatoprotective,
antimicrobial, antirheumatism and spleen diseases. This review covers detailed
ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry and bioactivities of Aphanamixis polystachya. A number
of recently isolated active compounds including lipids, glycosides and saponins have also
been described in the paper.
