ABSTRACT
Standardization of Siddha drugs becomes highly essential in order to explore its potency, safety and efficacy in the global market. As a consequence of focusing upon the current need of drug Standardization the present work undertaken to standardize the Poly-herbal Siddha formulation Sivan Vembu Chooranam which has been used clinically for the treatment of several types of skin diseases. Aim of this study was to assess the quality of Sivan Vembu Chooranam by conducting organoleptic character analysis, Physico-chemical analysis, preliminary Phytochemical analysis, Analysis of microbial load, Specific Pathogen, Pesticide residue, Aflatoxin and Heavy metal
analysis. The results obtained from Physicochemical analysis clearly revealed that the percentage of loss on drying of Sivan Vembu Chooranam was 9.96% since loss on drying of the test drug is low, the stability of the drug is higher. Total ash value of Sivan Vembu Chooranam is about 7.4% in which acid insoluble ash is 2.63 %. Extraction value of drugs renders most significant information about partition of the active component the results of extract value study showed that alcohol soluble extract of Sivan Vembu Chooranam is 17.03 % and water soluble extract is 23.5%.This explains the purity of the test drug. Preliminary Phytochemical analysis showed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycoside, saponins, tannins and mucilage. The drug was free of Microbial contamination. Heavy metals and Pesticide were below detectable limit in test drug. The findings of this study highlightens the quality and safety of the Sivan Vembu Chooranam.
