ABSTRACT
Objective: Abroma augusta (L.), one of the herbal medicinal plants, contains several medicinially important secondary metabolite compounds including alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids and flavonoids. The present study has been undertaken to qualitatively analyze its phytochemical composition and to evaluate the antifungal properties of Abroma augusta. Methodology: The screening of phytochemicals was done by standard procedures and antifungal properties was characterized by disc diffusion method at conc. of 50 and 200 μg/disc with a standard Nystatin (50 μg/disc) against six pathogenic fungi to identify the presence of active metabolites in the leaves, root bark, root
wood, stem bark, stem wood and seeds of A. augusta extracting in two solvents, methanol and chloroform. Results: The different parts of plant A. augusta contained phytochemicals including alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, phenols, resins, saponins, steroids, tannins, and terpenoids except of few. The flower extract showed activity index against A. fumigatus, Mucor sp. and C.albicans. The leaf, stem bark and stem wood extracts were responsive on F. vasinfectum, A. fumigatus, Mucor sp and C.albicans. For the root bark extract, F. vasinfectum, Aspergillus niger, Mucor sp. and Candida albicans were responsive while root wood extracts were found to inhibit growth of F. vasinfectum, Mucor sp. and Candida albicans. Seed extracts were found active against F.vasinfectum, A.fumigatus and Candida albicans. For antifungal activity of the crude extract according to the intensity of activity the results could be arranged as Root bark>stem wood>leaf > stem bark>seed>root wood>flower. The chloroform extracts exhibit significant antifungal activity comparing to methanol extracts. The root bark (25mm) and stem wood extract (23mm) of chloroform were found to have maximum activity indices while root bark (22mm) and stem wood (16mm) extract of methanol against C. albicans.
