AN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL APPROACH AND CLINICAL PROFILE OF PATIENTS WITH UPPER GASTROINTESTINAL DISEASES

ABSTRACT
Background & Aim: Gastrointestinal diseases which are commonly encountered in the daily clinical practice include Antral gastritis, Duodenal ulcer, Esophagitis, Pancreatitis, Fatty liver disease. The aim of this study was to assess the risk factors, clinical presentation, complications and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases in health care centre in Warangal. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective observational study focused on patients with GI diseases. Data related to demographic details of the patient, lab findings (endoscopy reports), clinical presentation were collected from patient profile forms and assessed. Results: Among the data collected from 200 patients, most of them were found to be between the age group of 31-40 years where 75.5% patients were male and 24.5% were females. Antral gastritis
was reported in 41.1% patients, fatty liver, esophagitis, duodenal ulcer and pancreatitis were reported in 26.6%, 26.1%, 11.1%, and 5% patients respectively. Common symptoms found among them include dyspepsia, epigastric pain and burning sensation. Alcohol consumption (53 %), NSAID use (12 %), GERD (11 %), Smoking (4 %), hepatitis (4%) and other dietary changes were the risk factors found in our study. Complications associated with the diseases were found to be ascites, oesophageal varices, splenomegaly, and portal hypertension. Conclusion: 31- 40 years was mostly affected age group and alcohol consumption was reported to be the major risk factor in our study.
