ASSESSMENT AT APPROPRIATENESS OF MEDICATION THERAPY MANAGEMENT IN HYPERTENSION PATIENTS AT A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT
Objective: To conduct study on assessment of medication therapy management in hypertension patient at tertiary care center by applying Medication Appropriateness Index (MAI) comparing prescriptions to American Heart Association (AHA) guide line for treatment of hypertension disease and monitoring of adverse drug reactions and antihypertensive drug efficacy. Methodology: It is a prospective study observational study conducted in a multi specially care hospital for a six months period from October 2014 to March 2015. The patient data collection form was used to collect all the details, medications were analyzed according to MAI to identify the inappropriateness drugs prescribed, monitoring for Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) of
antihypertensive drugs. Result: In this study out of 142 case understudy male patients 52.8% were listed more than female patients 47.2%. Appropriateness of antihypertension medications was found to be 94.5%. In two cases metoprolol shows syncope side effect. Conclusion: It concluded the appropriateness for antihypertensive drugs was acceptable but should be improved. Metoprolol has indication in treatment of syncope where as its side effect in two cases was syncope attack.
