Abstract

A PRAGMATIC APPROACH OF FOLKLORE MEDICINE USED IN THE TREATMENT OF RENAL CALCULI

ABSTRACT

Introduction:- Urolithiasis (Renal calculus) is one of the painful urologic disorders and is a common cause of morbidity of Urinary System. Hereurolithais= ouron (urine and lithos (stone) There is 12% of incidence globally. Ayurveda classics describes this condition under the Topic of Ashmari. Folklore medicine is a traditional method of healing diseases with various herbal formulations without much adverse effects. Various herbs are being used in treatment of renal calculi. Few commonly available plants such as Costus speciosus, Lawsonia inermis and Tridax procumbens which possess diuretic and anti-urolithiatic effect were selected for the present study. Methodology:- To review the gunakarma of Kebuka, Madyantika, Mundakafor its diuretic and anti-urolithiatic effect in treating Urolithiasis. Discussion:- There are various Ayurvedic drugs used in treatment of Ashmari such as Pashanbheda, Varuna, Gokshura, Punarnava, etc. There is a need for substitutes as the above mentioned drugs are now listed under endangered species. These are common and easily available drugs, which is Bahukalpam, Bahugunam, Sampannam and yogya aushadha should be selected rationally for treatment of urinary calculi. Results and Conclusion:– Costus speciosus, Lawsonia inermis and Tridax procumbens which possess diuretic and anti-urolithiaticeffect. This can be taken for further studies to make it as evidence based medicine.
