ABSTRACT
The present study aims at evaluating the hemopoeitic potentials of Fleurya aestuans leaf extracts on alloxan-induced diabetic rats. The experimental rats were divided into seven groups. Diabetes was induced in all the test groups by intra-peritoneal injection of 150mg/kg bw of alloxan monohydrate. Rats of the first group served as controls. Rats of the second group were diabetic control. The third, fourth and fifth groups were diabetic rats, treated with Fleurya aestuans extracts respectively. The sixth and seventh groups were diabetic rats, treated with glibenclamide and kaempferol respectively. Significant reductions in the levels of RBC, Hb, PCV, CAT and SOD were noted in group 2. The level of MDA, WBC and Platelets were elevated in group 2. RBC, Hb, PCV, CAT and SOD were statistically increased in group 4, 5 and 7. However, MDA, WBC and Platelets were statistically decreased in group 5, 6 and 7 compared with group 2. The oral administration of Fleurya aestuans leaf extract could be useful both in boosting blood parameters and combating diseases irrespective of the anaemia and leukocytosis caused by alloxan therapy. This study suggests that Fleurya aestuans leaves might be useful in the treatment of diabetic anaemia, leukocytosis and thrombocytosis caused by hyperglycemia in humans.
