PHARMACOGNOSTICAL AND PHARMACEUTICAL EVALUATION OF KARPASASTHYADI SANKARA SWEDA YOGA IN THE MANAGEMENT OF AMAVATA

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Swedana has been mentioned with qualities of ‘Stambha Gaurava Shitaghna’ in Charaka Samhita. Specifically Ruksha and Ushna properties of the selected Sankara sweda are beneficial in Amavata (Rheumatoid arthritis) due to its Ushna Tikshna like properties. Materials and Methods: Raw drugs of Sankara Sweda Yoga as per the reference in Bhaisajya Ratnavalli was procured from Pharmacy, ITRA, Jamnagar, Gujarat and local market of Jamnagar, Gujarat. Powder of the drugs was prepared as per the standard preparation procedure at Rasashastra department, ITRA, Jamnagar. The final product was then subjected to pharmacognostical and pharmaceutical analysis. Pharmacognosy of Sankara Sweda Yoga was carried out by preparing a slide made with glass slide and cover slip. Then this slide was observed under the Carl Zeiss Trinocular microscope. Organoleptic characters and physico-chemical parameters were noted. HPTLC was performed and observed under short UV (254 nm) and long UV (366 nm). Results: Pharmacognosy study of Sankara Sweda Yoga revealed presence of starch grains, fibres and oil globules. Analytical study of Sankara Sweda Yoga showed 3 spots at 254 nm and 366 nm both. Discussion and Conclusion: The result obtained was within the limits prescribed in ayurvedic pharmacopoeia and which are satisfying for quality assurance.
