Abstract

EVALUATION OF WOUND HEALING ACTIVITY OF AVERRHOA CARAMBOLA

Kumari Sonu* and Dev Prakash

ABSTRACT

The present study was aimed to examine the effect of Averrhoa Carambola methanolic extract on wound healing process. Experimental studies we have used 30 healthy male wistar rats and divide them into five groups. Each group is treated with the ointment treated group 2 % methanolic extract ointment and 5 % methanolic extract ointment for 20 days. We used ointment base as a control and Betadine as a standard and same five groups of Wistar rats are also treated with respective control and standard for 20 days. In excision wound model, period of epithelization time and wound area were monitored on days 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 using scale. Incision wound model and dead space, were performed for breaking strength value. It has been observed that, an ointment formulation prepared with methanolic extract (2 % and 5 %) of Averrhoa carambola showed significant results. In the excision wound model it is observed that when animal treated with methanolic extract (2 % and 5 %) ointment of Averrhoa carambola there is significantly increase in the rat of contraction and hydroxyproline content as compared with standard group. In the incision wound model it is observed that when animal treated with methanolic extract (2% and 5%) ointment of Averrhoa carambola there is significantly increase in the rat oftensile strength as compared with standard group. The histological examination showed the more profound epithelial cell growth with more collagen in Wistar rats after treatment with methanolic extract (2% and 5%) ointment of Averrhoa carambola as compared to standard and negative group. The results show that antioxidant activity helps in the release of free oxygen radicals, thus controlling microbial infection, leading to a quick healing process. Averrhoa carambola extract have good anti-oxidant activity which may also be responsible for wound healing property.

Keywords: Averrhoa carambola; Wistar rats; antioxidant; Hydroxyproline.
