ABSTRACT
Loop diuretics are the commonly used drugs in the CKD patients to relieve fluid accumulation in body. Both furosemide and torsemide are used in chronic kidney disease patients as a treatment for fluid overload. In this study the effect of furosemide and torsemide on fluid overload in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients were compared. A total of 60 non-dialysis stage 3 or 4 CKD patients were included in this single centred hospital based prospective cohort study.30 patients in the furosemide group were compared with 30 patients in the torsemide group for effect on renal function and the side
effect profile was also compared. The result showed that more patients in torsemide group showed an increase in serum creatinine above 30% on the fifth day of therapy. Side effect profile of both drugs were similar. The study concluded that furosemide is the preferred drug for sudden action and for acute therapy while torsemide is the preferred one for sustained action and for prolonged therapy.
