ABSTRACT
Aim: Alcoholism is a major public health problem around the world. India has the second largest population in the world, with 33% of its population consuming alcohol. Several comorbidities, complications and symptoms seen in alcohol dependent syndrome(ADS) patients. Care should be taken while prescribing medications, otherwise leads to hepatic damage. So, the aim of our study is to analyse the common symptoms and treatment of ADS patients. Methodology: This was a record based retrospective study on ADS patients admitted in the department of General Medicine at MIMS, Mandya. Totally 180 cases was collected based on inclusion criteria. A well-designed patient data collection form was used for collecting data and subjected to suitable
statistical methods. Result: Among 180 cases higher incidence of ADS was found in males (98.34%). The majority of patients belongs to the category of age 30-39 years and showed high alcohol dependence (67.22%). Maximum patients were hospitalized for Central Nervous System (CNS) (65.15%) symptoms for that Anti-Convulsant drugs (14.46%), Anti-Psychotics (11.59%) and Anti-Depressants (5.14%) were prescribed. Followed by Gastro-Intestinal (28.89%), Genito-Urinary (3.89%), sensory (1.11%) symptoms and generalised weakness (11.74%). Oral route was commonly preferred. Conclusion: Our study concludes that most of the ADS patients were males of age group 30-39 years. Majority of the patients showed high dependence on alcohol with Central nervous system symptoms. Treatment were given based on ADS symptoms. Clinical pharmacists play a crucial role in monitoring of hepatic parameters, alcohol abstinence and management of ADS.
