ABSTRACT
Dravya being second chatushpada[1] has been understood well, for स्वस्थस्म स्वास््मयऺणभ् आतुयस्म ववकायप्रशभनं[2] For getting success in chikitsa complete knowledge of dravya is needed. That can be in the form of Nama, Guna, and Karma.[3] Whereas nomenclature of dravya can be done on the basis of Rudhitaha, Prabhavataha, Deshokta, Lanchana, Upama, Virya, and Itarahvaya.[4]
“Anekartha varga” of Bhavamishra’s Bhavaprakasha nighantu is the special contribution which is the 23rd varga.[5] Anekartha means one word having more than one meaning. Understanding anekartha will be helpfull for solving the controversy, to get the knowledge about substitute, for reducing the confusions, and illusions about the identity
of a drug. “Dwayartha nama” of Bhavaprapraksh nighnatu mentions about 113 homonyms, each name has been ascribed 2 dravyas. In anekartha varga, homonyms are given based on morphological, pharmacological, topological etc characters. So there is need to explore, understand, analyze and rationalize the methodology to standardize the anekartha varga.
